Reclaiming My Health - Part One

If you've been following The Nest Effect for awhile, then perhaps you know of my health issues.

Here's a recap and some other info I perhaps haven't shared.
  • I have hypothyroidism and bile that just won't quit.
  • The last time I went to the doctor I was told that I need to cut down on my sodium intake. {GASP! But salt is my favorite. I'd choose it any day over sugar!}
  • The Dr. also said I better lose some weight due to health issues that run in my family.
  • I lost weight last year for our wedding, but then due to lack of finding a job, I ended up depressed and eating my sorrows away. I gained back what I lost, plus 5 pounds.
  • I'm a junky eater. I love pizza way more than anyone should. I love chips, popcorn {especially movie theater popcorn}, and any other super-salty treat. And then there's hamburgers, macaroni salad, wimpies, hamburg gravy, Chinese food, pasta, etc. - ya know, all of the really delicious foods.
  • I love soda. I've switched to diet soda, which I know is no better, but at least the calories are not there.
Now, I'm not writing this post for any sort of sympathy or what-ev-er. I'm writing this post to hold myself accountable. When it's out in the open, I feel like it's more than just me tracking my progress, even if y'all don't care about this health-journey I'm on. At least if it's out there, it somehow feels more...real?

So I said last week, this is all about being healthy. That is my main concern, but if I lose some weight in the process, that's just an added bonus. I wanted to share with you the resources I've been using because I like them so much.

Okay, I'm not being paid or commissioned or anything to mention WW. I've always wanted to try it out because I love the idea of counting points rather than calories. After all, calories are so difficult to count, especially when you eat more than the portion, but not another whole portion.

I'm subscribed online only. I'm not into going to meetings and what-not, so this is a solo deal for me. I Googled "WeightWatchers deal" and found one for $50 for 3 months. Perfect.

And even cooler than anything else, they have smartphone apps. Seriously. It can't get any easier. 3 apps are available for my Motorola Droid Razr smartphone: WW Points Tracker, WW Barcode Scanner, and WW Points Calculator. The Barcode Scanner is SO amazing. I just scan the barcode of what I'm eating and then select how much of the serving size I'm eating, and it calculates it all for me.

Fruits and vegetables are 0 points. So if I've used all of my points for the day and I'm truly hungry, I don't feel guilty and starve myself like I have with other calorie-counting programs I've tried. I feel like WW focuses more on eating healthy than full-blown "I hate my life because I'm dieting" programs. I'm learning to love fruits and vegetables, which is healthy long-term.

For eating out, I've found two websites who have national chain restaurant PointsPlus values already calculated out for you. {Exercise 4 Weight Loss // Just Diet Now} This has been SO helpful when we've made a quick stop when we're out at Wendy's or equivalent.

Here's an example from just the other night.
  • We stop at Wendy's. I am just craving a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger...for two weeks now. I think about having one, but decided to check my points that I have left first, and how many points it will cost me. We've already had dinner for the night, but I'm legitimately hungry.
  • A Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger is 9 points. I had 6 points left. Not happening. So I opted for a 6 point value size french fry. Just as satisfying.
  • Chris got a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger {9 points}, 5 piece chicken nugget {6 points}, medium Coke {7 points}, and small frosty {8 points}. He's not trying to lose weight, or be healthy, obviously. All of that adds up to more points than I'm allowed in one day. So grossly ridiculous. haha

Do you follow The House of Smiths? If not, you should. Not only is Shelley an amazing home/DIY blogger, but she's on an incredible weight loss journey and sharing her story along the way. She is truly such an inspiration. She has lost over 60 pounds this year and is still going. I love following her journey and enjoy her spunky personality that comes out in the way she writes her posts. She's absolutely amazing.

Last week I found a recipe blog called Skinnytaste. Not only does she share low fat recipes, but they're all foods that real people actually eat. It's not just vegetarian, or things you've never heard of {not that there's anything wrong with either of those, it's just not my thing}. The best part for me, at this time, is she gives the WW PointsPlus values for each meal. {Thank you!}

This week I made Gina's Swedish Meatballs recipe. Have you ever eaten IKEA's swedish meatballs? Okay, I felt like I was at IKEA eating them. They were so incredibly delicious. And Chris, who hates anything low fat since he only wants to gain weight, loved the meal as well.

I've started pinning recipes that I want to try on Pinterest. {Don't worry, I'm not pinning a recipe, then copying and pasting the WHOLE recipe in the description box. That bugs me...so I won't do it. Just the recipe name will do.} Check out my To Eat & Drink board to see what I'm pinning.

Okay, okay...this post is long enough and I've been typing for an hour. I have more to share about this topic at hand, so I'll post again next week.

Do you have any websites or online resources for me, regarding my healthy journey? I'd love to discover more websites!

  1. Calorie King is a good one for restaurants. The county I live in makes it required for chains to have a nutrient guide which is helpful for me since I'm diabetic and count carbs. Good Luck!

  2. Sparkpeople.com. is a wonderful site. It's like Facebook for people on a journey to better health.

  3. Phone App; MyFitnessPal...it's SO good. Very easy to use. Best database of food and recipes I've ever used and has a social component too. (I'm 20minutemom if you want to add me)

Book/Resource: Just finished reading Bob Harper's: The Skinny Rules and loved it. Not a "crash diet" just great principles for healthy eating and weightloss. I highly recommend it!!

    1. I was going to suggest MyFitnessPal and its FREE. I have used it for a year and a half.

    2. I was just about to suggest MFP too! Keeps me accountable and love how it calculates the calories "earned" from exercising too.

  4. You might consider subscribing to Hungry Girl's free email newsletter. I am sure you get a ton of email--- but she has great recipes and all include WW points. Her recipes are for 'healthy' equivalents of all kinds of foods. Restaurant main courses, normal food you'd have for dinner, desserts, etc.

  5. HI I also do weight watchers. The great thing that I have found is that they don'e expect a big loss, 1/2 - 2 pounds per week. So I find that to be super, as I don't always loose. But don't give up. If you can stop by a meeting (even if it is one) you might find that some stuff is a hole lot cheaper at a meeting than online sites (ebay etc). Good luck, I will check back...Since Feb when I started I have lost 12 pounds but I have gained a lot of knowledge and eating healthier. So don't give up..

  6. I like the recipes at www.eat-yourself-skinny.com. The ones I have tried are very good and I believe she also gives you WW points for them.

  7. I've been doing WW since last September. I've lost 46 pounds and am 9 pounds away from my lifetime goal. I'm definitely a WW believer. I am also a scoffer at all things touchy feely, but I must admit the meetings have made a big difference in my success. I also recruited some friends and that has helped too. Something about having the community seems to keep me on track. You can figure the points out for any recipe you cook with the recipe builder tool. The Cooking Light magazine recipes (just google)are great and give you all the nutritional info. I also like the LaLoosh Blog (she includes the WW points with her recipes) - http://www.laaloosh.com/
    Good Luck!

  8. Hi tiffany! Congrats on taking the first steps :) I'm glad I read this in my feed this morning. I usually read feeds duringmy bike warm up which really helps me get thru the work out. I hope you share ur weight watchers experience I've been nervous about it. An app I've been using that works great is my fitness pal and a fitbit. I highly recommend them both. I lost 10 lbs from jan to march by just consciously watching how much I eat as opposed to sacrificing what I love to eat. Good luck and look forward to reading about ur progress in the coming mornings.

  9. I can totally relate. I have Hashimotos where my thyroid goes hyper/hypo (mostly hypo), and it seems like no matter how healthy I eat the scale just won't budge. Then when I eat tortilla chips out if frustration, I gain 2 lbs that never go away. I'm a Lifetime WWer but I'm 20 lbs over my goal. I no longer believe in low fat dieting so I'm still trying to figure out what works best for me, but I know for a fact WW works. Sounds like you've got a good plan. Let me know if I can help. Best of health - the other Tiffany

  10. I recently started to follow a blog called Everyday Paleo. It's all about following a healthy lifestyle with exercise tips and the Paleo way of eating. You may not like everything about it but there are some really great tips and a interesting recipies that might help you with your health issues. I'm slowly revamping my diet (that is remarkably similar to yours, "yea to the perfect food called pizza") to try and loose the extra 65 lbs. that I've managed to pack on over the years.
Good Luck and hope you start feeling better!

  11. WW works if you work it :) If you track religiously you will lose weight. I lost 15 lbs. before my wedding, but pretty much stopped tracking after and gained it all back. Now I'm working on losing again. I love skinnytaste, and my other two favorites are:
http://www.preventionrd.com/ (no points, but she has the nutrition info for all of her recipes), and http://pointlessmeals.blogspot.com/. Of course there are WW friendly recipes popping up on Pinterest all the time. My other suggestion is if you have recipes that you've made and like, plug them in the recipe builder and it will suggest how to make it lighter. Good luck!

  12. Check out laaloosh.com. It's a great blog with tones of weight watcher recipies all with points attached to them. If you like skinnytaste I think you'll like laaloosh! Good Luck!

  13. Love your blog and glad to see you are finding success with WW. I have been in Weight Watchers since January and it is just made for people who like getting and keeping organized. Love the scanner ap. Must say, I have to have my meetings. I have missed two since January and gained both times. Those are the only two weeks I gained so learned my lesson. I am 38# lighter and my house is totally organized for my new way of living. All treacherous foods are purged and semi-treacherous foods are clearly labeled with points. I keep my measuring tools handy! My salvation is grapes, pineapples, mangoes and cherry tomatoes. This must be my tenth time trying WW but it is the first time I have succeeded. I think it is the E-Tools that make the difference - and being really organized. You are going to love the journey. I am off most of my meds and my energy level is really improved. Also, love getting rid of all my old clothes and starting over with a plan in mind so my closet doesn't get stuffed with complete wardrobes for three different sizes of me.

  14. I have had issues with weight for most of my life. My problem is 99% what I eat. I was introduced to THRIVE foods through shelf reliance and was hooked immediately. They have such great products that are easy to use daily. They have yummy fruits and vegetables that most of us need in our diets I know I didn't eat as healthy because it takes "too much time". The company has an awesome website that has thousands of free recipes. I am in the process of building a blog at liveathrivinglife.blogspot.com that has information about the products, links to their website, order information and how to become a consultant yourself. My plan is to post recipes as well (I just haven't gotten there yet). I would be happy to send you some sample and information. I love your blog btw! So fun to follow! Best wishes to you and your endeavor of health!

  15. WW never changed me or my eating habits like P.I.N.K. has. I recommend P.I.N.K. (www.pinkmethod.com) I learned about it on Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz has featured it too. I'm 53 years old and am stronger and healthier than I've ever been. Started doing the food plan and workouts in January. Have lost 20 lbs, many, many, inches all over, and 2 sizes. I've learned to eat healthy, cut sugars and carbs, eat more veggie. Only $69 plus cost of 3# and 5# weights and yoga mat, you get journal, DVDs, online access. No gym membership and all workouts can be done at home.

Even if you don't do the food plan...the workouts are amazing, and body changing.

  16. I'm on WW too but I am way too casual about it, I have lost some weight but prob not nearly as much as I could! For restaurant guides, I think one of the best is Dotti's - she has thousands of places listed here...

    Good luck!!

  17. I love http://danicasdaily.com/ and http://firelitesfire.com/

I have had great success with WW and love the points system!

  18. Hey Girl!!!
I'm doing the same thing trying to lose some weight and get healthy. I won't lie it was hard at first but now that I have a routine down its so much easier. I do calorie counting only because I;m a control freak so that's how I do things. :)
I have a blog on making skinny recipes and its alot easier to hold myself accountable knowing that people out there know I'm trying to lose weight. So don't give up and keep your chin up!

  19. I have never done WW but good luck with it. I have used Myfitness pal and it has helped but just like anything consistency is the key. I love Skinny taste recipes they are so easy to make and they are yummy.

  20. I am on WW also and a great website that works well for me is Dotti's Weight Loss Zone. they have the nutritional values, old points values, and new points plus values for tons of fast food and restaurant chains and some smaller chains as well as the mega ones. you should check it out! they also have an app for the iphone, so they might have one for other smart phones as well!

    http://www.dwlz.com/

good luck on your journey and just keep going even if you fall off the band wagon from time to time, the best part about weight watchers is that it is made so that you can just hop right back on and keep going.

  21. Hey! I have hypothyroidism too as well as a wheat intolerance. Giving up wheat/gluten products was super hard at first and I blamed all of my icky feelings on my thyroid. Just be patient with yourself and cut little things out one at a time. I kicked my coke zero habit by chugging water all.the.time. My husband and I try to eat clean 90% of the time, and I've only recently stopped kicking myself every time I have something sugary (am kind of a sugar monster).

Something I always read and have started to try (and believe!) is that you should get TONS of protein in your diet. It really does keep you full and satisfied for longer periods of time. We also keep a huge bowl of fruit on our kitchen table (apples and oranges) in case I get super hungry when I shouldn't be.

Good luck Tiffany! I'm so excited to hear about your progress! :)
    xoxo

  22. Hi Tiffany!
GO YOU for reclaiming your health! Sharing your goals is a great way to keep motivated. I tried WW online, and while it didn't work for me, it did give me a great start on watching what I eat and keeping a journal of food and exercise. It's great to be able to see what you did to celebrate or redirect your efforts.

As for other websites, I really like using workouts from Women's Health (a lot of them don't require fancy equipment), Eating Well (great e-newsletter), and myfitnesspal.

    YOU CAN DO IT!

  23. Hi Tiffany,
First of all i want to say thank you so much for writting this i love your blog and it is so nice to know there are people out there that i can relate to health and fitness wise, my family tries to be supportive and i appreciate that but i dont think people really realize what hypothyroidism can do to you both psyichallty and emotionally and on top of that having to work full time and be a mom so i thank you for your post and hope to continue to get inspired and read your posts, i am here for you ;) and i am so inspired by you

  24. This is kind of late as I've just discovered your website today. You have an awesome website. As a recent grad of a teacher education program, I am especially enjoying all of your ideas. I did want to mention the website http://www.hungry-girl.com/ I love this website. I am like you and love pizza and all of the other delicious foods. Hungry Girl has tons of recipes for foods like this but healthier versions. Also, she has WW points on her website and in her cookbooks. Good luck!
