Reclaiming My Health - Part Two

{Read part one.}

Truth?

Last week was a train wreck.

First off, I was on my *monthly emotional roller coaster*. The emotions were even worse with a good friend moving to VA to start his military career. And then news, after news, after news of changes that will indirectly affect me. Too much sad news.

I honestly don't ever have cravings for anything...ever. Last week I did. I didn't track my WeightWatchers points at all last week...it just wasn't worth it since I knew I wasn't going to care if I went over. I didn't exercise one bit either. Partially because I was so badly sunburned on my shoulders and legs that it hurt to move until about Thursday {and the burn happened on Sunday}.

Monday is my weigh-in day. I didn't lose or gain.

As of Monday, I'm back on board and fully focused and determined. I've been tracking all week and doing really well. I've been making healthy choices when making dinner by swapping ingredients where I can. I've been jogging {the 100 degree weather makes it absolutely dreadful though - even when the sun is down} and doing Zumba {with the XBOX 360 Kinect}.

My best accomplishment so far this week? Going to the movies with my BFF to see Magic Mike and not getting popcorn. This is truly very difficult for me because movie theater popcorn is my absolute favorite. Instead I ate before going and snuck in Goldfish crackers for my salty alternative.

For exercise, I do a combination of walking and jogging and Zumba {when I'm home alone because I truly look ridiculous doing it}.

Where I live, there's an incline or decline no matter which way you go, so I've decided to briskly walk the incline and when I turn back, jog all the way home. Each block is 0.1 of a mile, so I walk one mile and then jog 0.8 back. I'm working to increase gradually.

I also have Zumba Fitness for the XBOX 360. It uses the Kinect Sensor, so it tracks my movements and lets me know how close I am to looking like the instructor. haha I just {literally, as I'm writing this} bought Zumba Fitness Rush on Amazon. I've read the reviews and supposedly it's better, so we'll see.

I have a hard time getting in to exercising and sticking with it. I easily get bored. I don't like repetitive. I don't like slow {I just don't have the patience for yoga or pilates}. I don't like anything that doesn't make me feel like I'm getting results. Zumba and jogging make me feel the burn all around. They're both great full body workouts for me. I am not bored with Zumba yet, surprisingly. I'll do the 45 minute intermediate "class" and the time just flies by because it's fun.

When walking or jogging outside, I use the Cardio Trainer Pro app on my phone. Luckily I snagged it on Amazon when it was the free app of the day in May 2011, so I didn't pay for it. {They also make a free version called Cardio Trainer.} The paid version isn't really necessary for me because I don't use the pro features, but since I have it, I just use it.

I turn on the GPS on my phone and let it map my route. That way I can see my time, distance, pace, calories burned, etc. I've used this app for two years now and still like it.
Music is an absolutely must have for me when working out. It has to have a good beat and pace. Here's what's on my playlist currently.

B.o.B - Play the Guitar
Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks
Ellie Goulding - Lights
Kid Cudi - Make Her Say
Glee - Thriller / Heads Will Roll
Lil' Wayne - Got Money
Chiddy Bang - Opposite of Adults
Shiny Toy Guns - Major Tom
Calvin Harris - Feel So Close
Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks
Gorillaz - Rhinestone Eyes
Trey Songz - Say Aah
Florence + the Machine - Shake It Out
Gym Class Heroes - The Fighter
Grouplove - Tongue Tied
Alex Clare - Too Close
Lupe Fiasco - Words I Never Said
Fun. - Some Nights
Foster the People - Helena Beat

I'm always looking for more music to add to my playlist. Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Tiffany! I always really enjoy Outkast "Hey Ya" when I'm working out. Just a fun song for me that puts a smile on my face. We have very similar tastes in music based on your playlist :) Good luck!

  5. Just wanted to put in some words of encouragement for your journey to health. You are doing great! I'm impressed that you are running in this crazy Utah heat, and the Zumba sounds like a lot of fun (I may just have to check it out too). Love the playlist!

I've read your previous posts about your health and I definitely feel for you with the hypothyroid and gallbladder/bile issues. I don't have hypothyroidism, but I had my gallbladder removed almost 2 years ago and have gained quite a bit of weight since then despite no changes to my diet or exercise level. My doctor recently suggested that I try taking digestive enzymes, so I'm going to give that a try...

Keep up the great work. You are inspiring me!

  6. I was doing SO good before vacation (and not too bad during), but I've been terrible ever since I've been home! I want to get Zumba for Xbox, is the intensity similar to a class? Eating "clean" made such a difference for me, energy wise (I'm recovering from 8mos of cancer treatments), I don't know why I haven't come up with the motivation to get back to it.

P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only "mature adult" to listen to Lil Wayne. I mentioned it at work and everyone looked at me like I was crazy! ;)

  7. I just found your blog, and I'm working on the same thing. I'm trying to eat better (not easy on vacation) and workout. I listen to Niki Minaj "Starships" and "Where Them Girls At?" a lot. I've also gotten into the habit of dancing while I walk. I look ridiculous, but I get into the music and have fun, and sometimes I'm more tired after the dancing then after the running. Must be working! Keep at it!
